SPOKANE, WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – Three wildfires around Spokane have resulted in the destruction of at least 700 structures. Authorities issued evacuation orders affecting approximately 67,000 people. Since Saturday, the Old Trails, Autumn Lane, and Fairview fires have scorched over 8,000 acres. As of Monday night, officials reported no fatalities or serious injuries. Over 1,000 firefighters continued efforts to combat the flames and safeguard neighborhoods within Spokane County. Fire management teams categorized the incident among the nation’s highest-priority wildfire responses.

The combination of strong winds and dry vegetation pushed the wildfires from open land into populated areas on Spokane’s northern outskirts. The Old Trails Fire crossed the Spokane River and reached northwest neighborhoods within hours of igniting. The flames caused extensive damage to homes, businesses, vehicles, and utility infrastructure across multiple communities. Infrared surveys indicated potential damage to hundreds of additional structures, though officials had not yet confirmed these losses. Smoke from the fires spread across Spokane, significantly reducing visibility near active fire zones.

On Monday, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 37-year-old Aaron F. Farinacci on suspicion of first-degree arson. Investigators linked this arrest solely to the Old Trails Fire, which originated near Old Trails Road and Euclid Avenue. A court will determine whether charges are filed, and the arrest does not imply guilt. Authorities are still investigating the causes of the Autumn Lane and Fairview fires. No further arrests related to the Spokane-area wildfires have been reported.

Evacuations Widen Across Spokane County as Fires Continue to Spread

Evacuation orders extended over large sections of northern and northwestern Spokane, including nearby communities across the county. During the expanding emergency, officials evacuated patients from the Mann-Grandstaff Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Spokane convention center was opened as a shelter for displaced residents and their pets. Community organizations provided food, water, and essential supplies. Local agencies coordinated emergency childcare, road closures, and public information efforts for those affected.

Governor Bob Ferguson of Washington declared a statewide emergency and authorized support from the National Guard as the fires spread through eastern Washington. This declaration enabled agencies to coordinate personnel, equipment, and emergency aid across the impacted counties. A burn ban remained in effect throughout the region due to severe heat and drought conditions. Multiple state and external firefighting teams were mobilized to assist. Officials also requested federal support amid the heavy demand for firefighting resources across the Pacific Northwest.

Firefighters Focus on Protecting Homes and Critical Infrastructure

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources joined forces with local and federal teams in managing the Spokane Complex response. Aircraft deployed retardant while ground crews used engines, hand lines, and heavy equipment near threatened homes. Efforts also aimed to safeguard roads, transmission lines, hospitals, and water facilities. On Monday, fire managers reported no containment around the three fires near Spokane. Road and park closures remained in effect, including restrictions at Riverside and Mount Spokane state parks.

The fires caused damage to power infrastructure, leaving thousands without electricity during the initial days of the emergency. Utility crews worked to restore service where conditions allowed, while emergency teams kept hazardous areas off-limits. Officials urged residents to adhere to evacuation notices and to avoid flying drones near firefighting aircraft. Updated maps and alerts continued to guide the response as fire boundaries shifted. Damage assessment teams surveyed burned neighborhoods and verified property losses before releasing detailed totals.
