South Korea Continues Fuel Tax Reduction Policy into November to Mitigate Price Fluctuations

SEOUL / RankWire.AI / – The South Korea government has announced a two-month extension of its temporary fuel tax reduction scheme, now lasting through the end of November 2026. This move aims to shield domestic consumers and logistics operators in the industrial sector from ongoing global energy price volatility. The decision was finalized during an economy-focused ministers’ gathering in Sejong, chaired by Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol, who is also serving as Deputy Prime Minister. Under this extended framework, the existing tax cuts—15 percent for gasoline and 25 percent for diesel and liquefied petroleum gas butane—will continue at fuel stations nationwide, even though they were originally set to expire at the end of September.

The government is maintaining higher discount rates on taxes for commercial transportation fuels to support logistics operations and small enterprises that rely on light utility trucks. With the extension, the statutory excise tax on gasoline will stay capped at 698 won per liter, offering a 122-won discount below standard rates. Diesel taxes will remain at 436 won per liter, providing a reduction of 145 won. Additionally, butane excise rates are fixed at 152 won per liter, with a 51-won discount per unit. The extension of South Korea’s fuel tax cut scheme is intended to help manage inflation expectations domestically while energy markets adapt to persistent international supply constraints.

Officials from the Ministry of Finance confirmed that legislative amendments to the Enforcement Decree of the Transportation, Energy, and Environment Tax Act, along with the Individual Consumption Tax Act, will be submitted to the Cabinet for immediate implementation. They emphasized that, although domestic inventories remain stable, ongoing geopolitical instability in the Middle East requires active fiscal management to prevent sharp increases in retail fuel prices. The Ministry of Finance and Economy’s data indicates that energy import costs continue to put upward pressure on consumer price indices, making tax policy adjustments a key intervention tool.

Extension of South Korea’s Fuel Tax Relief Maintains Price Reductions at Service Stations

Alongside the tax relief, Minister Koo has committed to expanding diplomatic efforts with major oil-producing nations. The goal is to diversify energy import sources and reduce dependence on vulnerable shipping routes. According to official reports from Yonhap News Agency, the country’s energy monitoring agencies will keep emergency systems active to track global crude price movements in real time. Domestic energy distribution channels have been instructed to ensure that the benefits of tax relief are directly passed on to consumers at retail fuel stations across the country.

Energy market analysts from international financial institutions note that South Korea depends on imports for over ninety percent of its petroleum requirements. This reliance leaves the economy vulnerable to external supply disruptions. Maintaining the fuel tax relief allows logistics fleets operated by companies affiliated with Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters and domestic manufacturers to stabilize freight costs ahead of winter demand peaks. Logistics managers confirmed that without continued fiscal support from the government, freight expenses would have risen sharply.

Sejong Hosts Economic Ministers’ Meeting Led by Deputy Prime Minister Koo Yun-cheol

Before the November deadline, the Ministry of Finance and Economy will assess macroeconomic indicators, international crude futures, and seasonal demand trends. These evaluations will help determine if additional fiscal measures are necessary. The government’s statistical agencies will continue releasing regular reports on consumer price indices, import volumes, and energy consumption data.

Official documents outlining tax rate changes, amendments to enforcement decrees, and assessments of energy markets will be accessible through government official portals. Authorities and economic ministries remain coordinated in efforts to balance fiscal revenue needs with the broader goal of maintaining economic stability.
