Global health authorities announced on Friday that the outbreak of Ebola in Central Africa is escalating at an unprecedented pace. The World Health Organization confirmed that if community transmission is not swiftly contained and regional supply chain issues are not addressed, the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Ebola outbreak could surpass all previous death tolls. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the current epidemic’s trend risks exceeding the devastating 2014–2016 West African outbreak, which caused over 11,000 deaths.

The Ebola outbreak in DR Congo has resulted in 1,916 fatalities and 4,209 confirmed infections, according to official data available through Aug. 7. This figure increases the previous death toll by 29, surpassing the 1,887 reported earlier. Health officials also noted that 595 patients are currently receiving treatment in isolation. Additionally, 828 individuals have recovered from the Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak.

Chad’s health authorities have verified an urgent waterborne health crisis that has resulted in 13 fatalities since official public notices were issued late last month. The Ministry of Public Health of Chad reports that epidemiological data shows a cholera outbreak causing the deaths of 13 individuals. Confirmed and suspected cases across the country have risen to 239. The official statistics indicate a nationwide case fatality rate of 5.4 percent, which is well above international public health standards for managing emergencies of this kind.

Scientific researchers study cardiovascular disease data to improve public health prevention. The detailed epidemiological study explored the main causes of death to understand how elevated BMI influences chronic health conditions. Results identified cardiovascular problems as the leading cause of death, with coronary heart diseases responsible for 2,009 fatalities. Neurodegenerative diseases ranked second, with Alzheimer disease and other forms of dementia linked to 1,652 deaths. Cerebrovascular diseases contributed to 1,171 deaths, alongside significant figures related to chronic kidney disease and various digestive cancers. Analysis of the demographic data reveals that the risk of death associated with excess weight increases considerably with age. People aged 65 and above experienced the highest rates of health issues related to obesity. Gender-specific results showed that male mortality rates were higher than female rates in most age groups. However, among those aged 85 and older, women reported higher total death rates. Experts attribute this pattern to the longer average lifespan of women within the population.

European health organizations are urging the European Union to implement more robust and legally binding heat protection strategies as rising temperatures pose increasing threats to public health. The Health and Environment Alliance, also known as HEAL, advocates for standardized EU-wide criteria for national climate adaptation strategies. They also call for mandatory heat-related targets for member states. The campaign emphasizes the necessity of increased funding to bolster health resilience.

Moderna has commenced a Phase 1 clinical trial testing an experimental vaccine targeting Bundibugyo ebolavirus in Canada. The trial started with the first participant receiving the mRNA-1469 vaccine on August 3 at a location in Truro, Nova Scotia. This development occurs amid ongoing transmission of the virus across multiple provinces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The World Health Organization has designated the situation as a public health emergency of international concern.
