During the event, Matsui used the city’s Peace Declaration to urge leaders of nations to move away from reliance on nuclear deterrence. He emphasized the need for nuclear-armed countries to confront the human toll of atomic warfare. Additionally, Matsui called on political figures to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki and listen to the stories of survivors, known as hibakusha. These testimonies have been central to Hiroshima’s annual memorials for many years.
