MENA Newswire News Desk: Dubai International Airport (DXB) is poised for a record-breaking year after welcoming 68.6 million guests in the first nine months of 2024, marking a 6.3% increase over the same period in 2023. The robust performance underscores Dubai’s growing global appeal as both a travel hub and a destination, solidifying its reputation as the world’s busiest international airport for the tenth consecutive year, according to the Airports Council International (ACI).

Passenger traffic rises 6.3% at DXB, hitting 68.6M in nine months

In the third quarter alone, DXB served 23.7 million guests and handled over 111,300 flights, bringing total flight movements for the year to 327,700, a 6.4% year-on-year rise. This growth reflects the airport’s resilience and operational efficiency in managing high traffic volumes. Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, attributed the success to the dedication of the DXB team and continued investments in customer service and technology, which have enhanced the guest experience.

Griffiths highlighted a shift in travel patterns, with direct traffic now outpacing transfer traffic—a testament to Dubai’s emergence as a leading destination for tourism, business, and residency. The city’s thriving real estate market and appeal to top talent have further bolstered its attractiveness. With a vibrant winter events calendar and renowned attractions, the airport expects to welcome another 23.2 million guests in the final quarter.

India led DXB’s top destination markets, accounting for 8.9 million guests during the nine months, followed by Saudi Arabia with 5.6 million, reflecting a 15.2% increase. The UK ranked third with 4.6 million passengers, up 4.7%. Pakistan and the USA contributed 3.4 million and 2.6 million travelers, respectively, while Germany added 2 million. Among city destinations, London remained the most popular, with 2.9 million passengers, followed by Riyadh with 2.3 million – a 25.8% surge. Mumbai, Jeddah, New Delhi, and Istanbul also featured prominently.

Operational efficiency remained a hallmark of DXB’s performance. The airport processed 60.1 million bags with a 99.3% accuracy rate, and 92% of arriving baggage was delivered within 45 minutes. Advanced technologies, such as biometrics and real-time tracking, have enhanced this seamless experience for passengers.

Looking ahead, DXB anticipates a strong performance driven by major global events, including the DP World Tour Championship, Emirates Dubai 7s, and New Year’s Eve celebrations. The ongoing cruise season is also expected to contribute significantly to passenger numbers, with Dubai’s infrastructure enabling smooth air and sea connectivity.

The winter season will see increased capacity, with Western Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region adding 237,000 and 301,000 seats, respectively. New routes introduced by airlines such as ITA Airways, Condor, Hainan Airlines, and Druk Air further expand DXB’s global network. Dubai World Central (DWC) will also see increased activity, welcoming carriers like Transavia and Eurowings. As DXB closes out a dynamic year, it remains a cornerstone of Dubai’s economic growth, showcasing the city’s enduring appeal as a global hub for travelers seeking exceptional experiences.
