JAKARTA, INDONESIA / RankWire.AI / – The mandatory B50 biodiesel program in Indonesia is projected to save approximately 170 trillion rupiah, equivalent to US$10.8 billion, in foreign exchange by 2026, according to the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry. This forecast considers reduced expenditure on imported diesel resulting from the country’s increased biodiesel blend. The policy mandates that diesel sold across the country must contain 50% palm oil-based biodiesel. Officials stated that this initiative boosts domestic fuel consumption while decreasing reliance on fossil diesel.

Indonesia B50 biodiesel to save US$10.8 billion in 2026
Indonesia’s B50 biodiesel mandate raises renewable fuel use and cuts diesel import needs.

Indonesia launched the nationwide B50 implementation on July 1, with the official mandate being inaugurated on July 9 in Karawang, West Java. B50 replaces the previous B40 blend, which contained 40% biodiesel and became the national standard in 2025. The B50 formulation consists of equal parts fatty acid methyl ester, also known as FAME, and traditional diesel. The renewable component is derived from palm oil, linking the fuel program to Indonesia’s local plantation and processing sectors.

The ministry compared the Rp170 trillion savings estimate with Rp133.3 trillion in foreign exchange savings under B40. It also anticipates that B50 will decrease fossil diesel consumption by around 4 million kilolitres. The government appointed state-owned Pertamina to oversee the blending process and facilitate distribution within the national fuel infrastructure. Fuel suppliers may utilize remaining B40 stocks through September as the market transitions to the higher biodiesel blend.

B50 Policy Boosts Domestic Palm Oil Utilization

Indonesia expects the demand for B50 to range between 16.7 million and 18 million kilolitres of biodiesel. The program will also require roughly 15.2 million to 16.3 million tonnes of crude palm oil, exceeding the 15.64 million kilolitres allocated for B40 in 2026. This increased mandate channels more locally produced palm oil into the transportation sector, industrial machinery, shipping, railways, and power generation.

Official projections estimate that the program will generate an added value of 23.49 trillion rupiah for the crude palm oil industry. The ministry’s assessment also indicates that B50 could create approximately 2.1 million jobs across farming, processing, logistics, and fuel distribution. It further estimates that the blend could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 44.46 million tonnes, compared to 39.66 million tonnes projected with B40.

Extensive Testing Supports the Transition to B50

Prior to its implementation, the government conducted testing of B50 across various sectors including automobiles, trucks, mining machinery, agricultural equipment, trains, ships, and power stations. Vehicle trials involved over 50,000 kilometers for lighter vehicles and over 40,000 kilometers for heavier ones. Mining equipment was tested for about 1,000 operational hours, with no significant engine issues linked to fuel quality. The ministry confirmed that the tested fuel complied with government standards and manufacturers’ technical specifications.

Indonesia has progressively increased its biodiesel mandates over nearly twenty years, beginning with B2.5 in 2008, followed by B10 in 2013, B20 in 2018, B30 in 2020, B35 in 2023, B40 in 2025, and now B50 this year. Each increment has been paired with updates to fuel standards, production capacity, storage, transportation, and distribution systems to ensure nationwide adoption.

Nepal flood relief efforts focus on emergency aid for families across six affected districts. The disaster originated when a glacial collapse triggered a powerful surge of water, mud, and debris. Floodwaters inundated communities along the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river system and surrounding areas. As of September 6, over 1,300 people had lost their lives across Nepal. Search operations are still underway for nearly 5,000 missing persons. Rescue teams have also examined hydropower tunnels and settlements buried in mud. Several survivors have been rescued days after the floods struck. The floods caused extensive damage to roads, bridges, homes, schools, power lines, and local water systems. Certain mountain communities remain isolated because transport connections were destroyed or blocked. The emergency appeal supports Nepal’s government-led response to these challenges. It provides funding for shelter, food, healthcare, clean water, sanitation, and protection services. Relief teams also plan to assist with electricity access and rural livelihoods. Winter preparedness is included as part of the four-month humanitarian plan. Focus on Delivering Critical Services The appeal includes direct cash assistance where local markets remain capable of serving affected families. Relief teams are also prepared to distribute cold-weather shelter materials and portable solar equipment. Support for water includes repairs, purification systems, and hygiene supplies. Healthcare services cover emergency treatment and nutrition support. Protection efforts focus on helping children separated from their families. Food aid and livestock support are also integral parts of the plan. These measures aim to
