MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s overall electricity production increased by 4.3% year-on-year through August 2026, reaching a total of 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours. During the same period in 2025, the output was 35,935.3 GWh. According to preliminary data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information, growth was observed in multiple governorates. This increase added approximately 1,546.5 GWh to the national total in the first eight months. In August alone, production hit 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July.

Muscat Governorate experienced the highest surge in overall electricity output, with a 204.8% rise compared to the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah followed with a 44.1% increase, while Al Wusta saw an 8.4% growth. Production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah rose by 5.5%. Dhofar also demonstrated growth, with electricity generation climbing 4.6% from January to August. The data indicated a broad expansion across most of the regions included in the national report.
Conversely, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a combined decline of 16.4% in electricity output. Musandam’s production was steady at 376.0 GWh, showing no significant change from the same period in 2025. The regional data reflected notable differences in electricity growth across Oman during this timeframe. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classified these figures as preliminary. The data encompass electricity output through the end of August 2026.
Net electricity generation increases by 4.6%
Oman’s net electricity output grew by 4.6% through August, reaching 36,463.9 GWh compared to 34,871.8 GWh in the same period last year. This measure accounts for regional purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat again led with a 204.4% increase in net production. Al Dakhiliyah saw a 44.2% rise, while Al Wusta and Dhofar experienced gains of 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. Overall, net output grew by approximately 1,592.1 GWh year-on-year.
Net electricity production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah increased by 5.4%. Meanwhile, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah reported a 16.6% decrease. Musandam’s net electricity generation stood at 368.0 GWh, with no significant change from the previous year. The regional figures largely mirrored the trend seen in total electricity production. National net output remained above the levels recorded during the first eight months of 2025.
Water production decreases across Oman during first eight months of 2026
Oman’s water output declined by 3.5% through August 2026, totaling 330.65 million cubic metres. In the same period of 2025, production was about 342.71 million cubic metres. Muscat experienced a 6.2% decrease, with water production falling to approximately 128.07 million cubic metres from roughly 136.57 million. Other governorates also saw a 3.4% drop, with water production reaching about 149.90 million cubic metres. Last year, these areas produced approximately 155.19 million cubic metres during the same timeframe.
Dhofar was the primary exception to the declining trend in water output. The governorate produced around 52.68 million cubic metres by August, an increase of 3.4% from about 50.94 million a year earlier. The latest data from utilities highlight contrasting national trends for electricity and water during the first eight months of 2026. While electricity generation increased at both total and net levels, overall water production remained below its level from the same period in 2025.
