Germany Records Nearly 10,000 Deaths Linked to Heatwaves During 2026 Mid-Summer Period

    July 31, 2026

During the first seven months of 2026, German public health officials confirmed approximately 9,800 fatalities related to heat. These figures, reported by Germany, mark the highest mid-year death toll since systematic tracking began in 2016. Data from the Robert Koch Institute shows that prolonged high temperatures from early April through July 19 significantly contributed to this increase. The federal agency, operating under the Federal Ministry of Health, stated that the total for 2026 already exceeds the entire annual death counts from any of the past ten years.
